Wing clipping

http://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-wingclipping.html

Chickens are the closest living relative to the dinosaur

laying hens are generally sex linked, with white boys and brown girls, although 1 in 10,000 can be a 'RED ROOSTER'.

Most chooks can be easily sexed from 8 weeks of age

Fresh eggs should not be boiled, untill approx 4 or 5 days old, due to extra nutrients, the egg will stick to shell.

.Chooks may live to 16 yrs, but 3 -5 yrs is a good estimate

The first 3 yrs are the most productive, for eggs

Chooks are a flock animal, 3 should be the minimum

Laying hens can begin to lay from 18-20 weeks of age.

1 laying hen will lay approx 6 eggs a week.300+eggs per year per chook

1 adult chook need approx 130grams pellets, plus scraps per day

20 kg bag of pellets should last 3 chooks 50 days

www.backyardpoultry.com is a great forum to answer questions about chooks.

Silkies, Bantams etc or ‘Toy chickens’, may only lay 50 eggs per year.

Toy chickens are generally harder to get and more expensive, adult hens may cost upwards of $40.

There are many different types of laying hen, look for the last name ‘Brown’.

1 nest box needed per 5 chooks, they will take turns to lay.

The Newcastle council holds chook keeping workshops.

A cheap brooder box can be made from $10 plastic crate and student lamp

Perches should be 35cm wide, too skinny will hurt thier feet.

20 cm perch per chook, in summer a bit more room is good, ie 25 cm

See a picture of a debeaked hen on the photos page

Sick chicks

If the droppings are not solid, chook may have upset belly,if you ate dirt you may have an upset belly too. put some sulphur quinn in water, can be purchased from most pet shops.

sneezing, gunk near nostrills, chook may have a cold, segregate chook keep warm at night, as long as has healthy appetite, chook should be ok.

If chook wont eat try putting food, next to pen, so other chooks try to get but just cant, put sick chook next to feed and try to bring on the jealous emotion, ie the sick chook aint hungry but, seems to want what others want, and like us a healthy appetite can keep you healthy.
